Shepherd's pie (typical Quebec recipe)

Shepherd's pie (typical Quebec recipe)

Recipe for 6 to 8 people

  • 1kg of mashed potatoes
  • 70g of butter
  • 150ml of milk
  • 450g of ground beef or stewing meat
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 can of sweet corn cream style (Del Monte)
  • Paprika and parsley
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 sprig of thyme and rosemary

1/ In a pot of salted water, cook the potatoes, drain, mash, add the butter, milk, and seasoning, mix, and set aside.

2/ Sauté the chopped onion with butter, thyme, and rosemary. Add the meat, sauté and brown, either ground or, as I prefer, stewing meat that I grind afterward. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat.

3/ Gently press the ground meat into the bottom of a baking dish, cover with corn, then the mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with paprika and chopped parsley. Bake for approximately 30 minutes in a preheated oven at 180°C and finish under the broiler.

Serve and enjoy with a good Canadian beer or perhaps a glass of cranberry juice.
