The water from the spring emerges on the surface of a well more than 235 meters deep. Scientific studies have shown that this water can take up to 750 years to seep through fractures and joints in 355-million-year-old limestones and dolomites before being drawn to the surface. Groundwater dissolves minerals from limestones and dolomites to give Ballygowan its special hydrochemical attributes.
