The spring water emerges from a well over 235 metres deep. Scientific studies have shown that it can take up to 750 years for this water to seep through fractures and joints in the 355 million year old limestone and dolomite before being drawn to the surface. The groundwater dissolves the minerals in the limestone and dolomite to give Ballygowan its unique hydrochemical attributes.
