Marmite was accidentally created in the late 19th century by German scientist Justus von Liebig. He discovered that brewer's yeast, a by-product of the beer-making process, could also be consumed when concentrated and bottled.

During World War I, due to its vitamin and mineral content, particularly vitamin B1, it was included in troop rations to help combat the epidemic of beriberi and other deficiency diseases, and during World War II it was a standard vitamin supplement for Germans stationed in Britain. In the 1930s, English scientist Lucy Wills used Marmite to successfully treat a form of anaemia in factory workers in Bombay, India. Lucy later identified folic acid as the active ingredient

From there, it was launched in 1902 by the Marmite Food Company, now Marmite Ltd, based in Burton-on-Trent. Local breweries provided the raw materials for its production, and that’s how history was made! Initially, the recipe contained a tasty blend of celery, salt, and spices. But later, vitamin B12, folic acid, thiamine, and riboflavin were added. The yeast released amino acids and soluble proteins before going through a secret process to obtain its flavor.

It was suggested in 1912 that a dietary deficiency of certain vitamins could be responsible for certain diseases. Marmite proved to be a rich source of B vitamins and has since become a popular part of the diet of many schools and hospitals. It even became part of the food rations of soldiers during World War I and as a dietary supplement in prisoner of war camps during World War II.
